Asset tagging starter guide

Designing a numbering scheme and rolling out asset tags across a whole site.

8 min read

Design the numbering scheme first

A good scheme is short, human-readable and never reused. Combine a site code, a category code and a sequential number - for example DUD-PMP-00214 - and reserve blocks per category so future assets slot in cleanly.

Decide what goes on the tag

Most estates need the asset number as text, the same number as a barcode or QR, the owning organisation, and a contact route. Anything else usually costs legibility.

Rolling out

Tag in a logical route around the site rather than by asset type, record as you go, and photograph each tag in place. Order a reserved continuation range at the same time so replacements match.

  • Survey and record surfaces before ordering
  • Reserve a continuation range for future assets
  • Apply above +10C to clean, dry, degreased surfaces
  • Keep a spare pack of replacements on site

Want this specified for your own assets?

Send us the details and we'll recommend a material, adhesive and print method.
